Reasons to Follow the CRC Standards before Ratification

  1. The US, as one of the principal writers of the CRC text finally adopted, already meets most of its standards. But there is little or no record of which standards we meet, and which we still need to improve.
  2. While we await ratification, the United States Government, State and local jurisdictions, private entities and scholars can gather and publish data showing how well the US meets specific standards of the CRC, as a basis for comparison with other countries and as an indication of the few areas in which the US still needs to work on in order to meet universal standards on the appropriate treatment of the children and their families.
  3. The information gathered can inform the consideration of Senators and the public of ratification when it is under debate.
  4. The information also can be used to improve US public policy toward children and families.
